NATCHITOCHES- Northwestern State University will hold its 17th Annual Research Day Thursday, April 15. The event is sponsored by the NSU Research Council.

Students and faculty at Northwestern will share their latest work with the university community. A total of 54 presentations in all disciplines are scheduled.

Presentations will take place from at 8:15 a.m. in Russell Hall and in the A.A. Fredericks Center for Creative and Performing Arts. Keynote speaker Dr. William Jenkins, president of the LSU System and acting chancellor of LSU's Baton Rouge campus will deliver an address at 9:30 a.m. in the David Morgan Auditorium (Room 107) of Russell Hall.

The Mildred Hart Bailey Award will be presented after Jenkins' speech. Presentations will begin again at 10:35 a.m. in Russell Hall and continue until 12:45 p.m.

The Bailey Award is given annually to a Northwestern faculty member for outstanding research and/or distinguished artistic performance or creative work substantially completed during the past three years. Criteria for the award include: scholarly or creative significance; national, regional or local impact; originality and ingenuity of project design and critical recognition by experts in the field.

Jenkins' topic will be "University-Based Research ­ Quo Vadis?" For the past five years, Jenkins has been president of the LSU System, which includes nine institutions on 10 campuses in five cities as well as 10 public hospitals in 10 cities.

A native of South Africa, Jenkins studied at the University of Pretoria, where he received his professional veterinary medicine degree in 1958 and specialist credentials in 1968. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri in 1970. After practicing veterinary medicine for four years, he joined the faculty at the University of Pretoria, advancing through the ranks to become professor and head of the Department of Veterinary Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology in 1971.

Jenkins moved to the United States in 1978 and joined the faculty in the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology at Texas A&M. He was appointed dean of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 1988 and was named LSU's provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs in 1993.

He has been active in continuing education and has delivered more than 150 lectures and addresses to diverse groups in the United States and internationally. Jenkins has taught extensively at both the professional and graduate levels. He has published more than 60 scientific articles and has contributed 15 chapters to various textbooks. Jenkins is the co-author of a textbook on veterinary pharmacology.

The NSU Research Council advises the university's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs on matters of policy and procedure. The Council also provides guidance on the development and administration of three newly created, internally funded and competitively administered seed grant programs aimed at stimulating research, creativity and dissemination of findings. Representation on the Council includes members of all academic colleges at NSU along with other areas directly or indirectly involved in research and sponsored programs.
