FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES Northwestern State University will hold its 18th annual Research Day Tuesday, April 12 in Russell Hall. The event is sponsored by the NSU Research Council and is open to the public.
During Research Day, Northwestern faculty and students share some of their latest work with the university community. Presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. Also, as part of Research Day, several units of the university will make poster presentations highlighting Northwestern's Continuous Improvement Plan.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Isiah M. Warner, vice chancellor of the Office of Strategic Initiatives and Boyd Professor and Philip W. West Professor of Analytical and Environmental Chemistry at LSU. Warner will speak at 10 a.m. His topic will be "Mentoring, Education and Research: The Pathway to Student Success."
The Mildred Hart Bailey Award will be presented after Warner's speech.
The Bailey Award is given annually to a Northwestern faculty member for outstanding research and/or distinguished artistic performance or creative work substantially completed during the past three years. Criteria for the award include: scholarly or creative significance; national, regional or local impact; originality and ingenuity of project design and critical recognition by experts in the field.
After the presentation of the Bailey Award, a showcase presentation will focus on undergraduate student research. Presentations by Anna Westergard and Robert Stewart, Jansen Smith and Renaldo Webb, Michael Griffin II and Krystalline Evans and Kayla Ellender will begin at 11 a.m.
A native of DeQuincy, Warner is a graduate of Southern University and earned a Ph.D. at the University of Washington. He was a member of the faculty at Texas A&M and Emory University before coming to LSU. Warner has also served as a visiting Program Officer at the National Science Foundation.
Results of Warner's research have appeared in approximately 250 refereed journal articles and have been the subject of more than 400 invited talks. His work has resulted in several patents with more pending. Last year, the Louisiana House of Representatives recognized him for his outstanding accomplishments on behalf of LSU.
The NSU Research Council advises the university's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs on matters of policy and procedure. The Council also provides guidance on the development and administration of two newly created, internally funded and competitively administered seed grant programs aimed at stimulating research, creativity and dissemination of findings. Members of the Research Council serve by appointment and are nominated based on their extensive knowledge about, and significant contributions to, the research and sponsored programs enterprise.
