FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES - Richard Rose has been named conductor of the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra. Rose replaces Scott York who resigned recently.
Rose, an associate professor of music, at Northwestern State had planned to retire later this month, but agreed to serve as orchestra conductor while a national search takes place over the next year.
"I am very excited about this opportunity. I am surprised that this took place," said Rose. "This will be a nice way to end my career. I look forward to a good season. We have chosen a variety of music this year. There should be music for everyone's taste."
Rose has been a faculty member at Northwestern since 1968. He was principal cellist of the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony for 25 years and has served as principal cellist for the Rapides Symphony Orchestra and the Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra. Rose has also been a guest conductor of the NNSO. He received a bachelor of music from the University of Louisville and a master of music from Florida State University.
For a number of years, Rose has also an active composer/arranger. He is a member of the Back Porch Band and has been musical director for the NSU Summer Theatre since 1994.
The Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony will begin its 2001-2002 season with "An Evening of Pops and Dancing" Thursday, Oct. 4. The concert will also feature the NSU Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Galindo Rodriquez performing a number of well-known big band tunes.
On Nov. 8, the orchestra will perform a program, "Russia from the New World," with selections by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Antonin Dvorak. NSU faculty member Nikita Fitenko will be featured on piano.
The orchestra will also take part in the annual Christmas Gala Nov. 29-30 which will highlight performing ensembles from throughout the Mrs. H.D. Dear and Alice E. Dear Department of Creative and Performing Arts.
Winners of the annual NSU Concerto Competition will perform in a concert on Thursday March 7. Violinist Manshan Yang will be featured.
The orchestra will close the season with "An Evening with the Choirs" Thursday, May 2. The combined NSU choirs will perform. The concert will include "Symphonic Picture: Pines of Rome" by Ottorino Respighi and Rose's "Requiem."
