                                   FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES - Enrollment in the Northwestern State University ROTC program will show a marked increase this fall with newly-enrolled cadets taking advantage of ROTC scholarships. As of May, the program awarded 11 full four-year scholarships to high school seniors who signed letters of intent accepting the Army ROTC scholarship to Northwestern. The Regiment noted a 20 percent increase in enrollment at the beginning of the Spring 2007 semester. Numbers for Fall 2007 reflect a 130 percent increase over last year.

“These 11 young men and women will major in a variety of fields ranging from nursing to aviation science,” said Captain Jonathan Lloyd, regimental recruiting officer.  “The Army awards these scholarships based on individual merit by considering the applicants scholastic achievement, athletic ability and demonstrated leadership.  These scholarships are very prestigious because they lead to careers as commissioned officers in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard.”

The ROTC scholarships at NSU cover not only all tuition and fees, but also up to $900 per year for books. Monthly stipends range from $300 per month for freshmen to $500 per month for seniors.  The University Plus Package provides all scholarship students money for room and board.

“ROTC is an extraordinary program that develops individuals into better leaders and more responsible adults,” said Maj. Alan Hardin, Demon Battallion executive officer. “Upon completion of the program, individuals will become a person that is part of an extremely elite organization that represents less than one percent of the total population of the United States.  Many graduates of the NSU Demon Regiment have gone on to further distinguish themselves both in the military and civilian sector. Former Demon Regiment cadets include seven general officers and a former NSU president.”

The Demon Regiment is accepting enrollment applications now for the Fall 2008 semester and scholarship applications for the Spring 2009 semester.  For more information, call (800) 217-6045 or visit the university website at www.nsula.edu/rotc.
