NATCHITOCHES - The Roussel Trio will present a recital at Northwestern State University Monday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. The trio will also perform at Centenary College Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Hurley School of Music.

The trio consists of flutist Dennette Derby McDermott, Adrienne Moffit Smith on viola and cellist Ruth Drummond.

Their program will include "Divertimento N.3" by Joseph Haydn, "Lullaby" and "Grotesque" by Rebecca Clarke and "Assobio a Jato" by Heitor Villa-Lobos." Also on the program are "Duo N.3 in E-flat" by Francios Devienne and "Trio opus 40" by Albert Roussel.

McDermott is an associate professor of flute and coordinator of theory at NSU. Her European debut was in the Czech Republic with the Czech premiere of Jindrich Feld's "Introduzione, Toccata e Fuga." In 1991, she gave a lecture/recital which included the American debut of the work at the University of North Texas. She was the recipient of the Magale Endowed Professorship in 1995 which allowed her to participate in an international mastercourse at the Janacek Academie of Music in the Czech Republic and also take part in a faculty exchange. McDermott was a visiting professor of flute at the Janacek Academie. She also presented solo recitals in Brno, Czech Republic and at the Academie of Music in Bratislava, Slovak Republic.

In 1998, she received NSU's Mildred Hart Bailey Research Award for her research and performances of Czech music. In 1999, McDermott received a CURIA grant and the Derby Endowed Professorship and recorded a CD of solo Czech flute works including "Introduzione, Toccata e Fuga."

McDermott has been a winner of the National Flute Association's Professional Convention Performers Competition three times and has performed at the Boston, Kansas City, Orlando, New York, Chicago, Phoenix and Atlanta flute conventions. Her work is published regularly in Flutist Quarterly, Flute Talk, Pan Pipes and American Piper. McDermott holds a bachelor's of music from Michigan State University, a master of music in performance from the University of Michigan and a doctorate of musical arts from the University of North Texas.

Smith is a former faculty member at NSU. She is a member of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra and plays in other area orchestra including the Longview Symphony. During the summers, she plays in the Breckenridge Music Festival in Colorado. Smith previously lived in Boston where she played in the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, The Opera Company of Boston, The Springfield (Mass.) Symphony, The Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and the New England Ragtime Ensemble.

Drummond has been a cellist with the Shreveport Symphony for many years. She also performs with the Baroque Artists of Shreveport. Drummond studied baroque performance practice at Oberlin College. In addition, she serves as chamber music coach for the Arklatex Youth Symphony Orchestra. Drummond has also been principal cellist with the Superior Music Festival Orchestra in Marquette, Mich.
