FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES-Alicia Schulz of Metairie will also represent Northwestern State University in June's Miss Louisiana Pageant.

Pageant organizers informed Northwestern officials Wednesday that Schulz would be allowed to take part in the pageant as Miss Northwestern. Schulz was named the winner of the Miss Northwestern Lady of the Bracelet Pageant Feb. 7 but had to relinquish the title when a tabulation error was discovered. The actual winner, Lacey Fletcher of Rosepine, will be in the pageant as Miss Lady of the Bracelet.

"We are grateful to the Miss Louisiana Pageant for allowing Alicia to enter the pageant and represent Northwestern," said Carl P. Henry III, director of student activities and organizations at NSU. "I know this has been a difficult situation for Alicia, her friends and family. She is an exceptional young woman who will be an outstanding representative of Northwestern."

Schulz is the daughter of Stephen and Claudia Schulz. She is a graduate of Mount Carmel Academy. Schulz is a member of Phi Mu Fraternity and Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society. Her platform issue is "Reviving and Maintaining Classes and Programs in the Arts and Music in Elementary and High School."

"I hope to get the university involved in mentoring programs with children to give them a look at life behind the scenes in the arts," said Schulz. "I would like them to sit in an rehearsal with the orchestra or jazz orchestra and have a chance to watch the musicians and ask them questions. They could go into the art studios and see how visual art is created."

Schulz said the events of last week were "a real blow." She is trying to put the disappointment behind her and focus on preparing for the Miss Louisiana Pageant.

"Perhaps it will come to be a blessing," she said. "Now, I have to keep working hard athletically and build my platform. I've been through a lot in a week. I have to go forward."
