NATCHITOCHES -Northwestern State University will host the annual Southeast Horn Workshop March 31-April 2. The event is a regional workshop of the International Horn Society held annually in the Southeast United States. This is NSU's first time to host the workshop.
Dr. Kristine Coreil, associate professor of horn and theory at Northwestern, is the conference organizer.
Students and faculty members from throughout the region will attend. The workshop will feature high school and college solo competitions, a quartet competition, recitals, lectures, masterclasses and demonstrations by instrument makers, music publishers and other companies serving musicians.
Featured artists at the workshop are Adam Unsworth of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Gail Williams of Northwestern University and formerly of the Chicago Symphony, and The Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse, Paul Blackstone, Audrey Good, Tony Licata and Gerry Wood.
In conjunctin with the workshop, the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra will present a concert Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Tickets to the concert are $10. NSU and Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts students are admitted free. Douglas Bakenhus is the conductor.
The concert will feature Williams, Unsworth, Michelle Stebleton of Florida State University and Patrick Hughes of the University of Texas and consists of works by Percy Grainger, Nicolas Maw, Beethoven and Schumann.
On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Williams and Unsworth will perform at a Featured Artists' Recital with works from Unsworth's new CD Excerpt This. Jazz musicians Diane Monroe on violin, Les Thimmig on woodwinds, Tony Micelli on vibraphone, Rahaah Meyer on bass and Cornell Rochester on drums.
Regional artists and university horn choir recitals are also scheduled throughout the workshop.
