FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES - Mike Hawkins, instructor of science at Northwestern State University, recently made a presentation at the LaSciLink Conference in Lafayette. Hawkins presented a talk on Northwestern's "Science: Out of this World" internet and video courses.

Hawkins told science supervisors, science specialists and science and math teachers about the goals of the program and pointed out differences between the two versions of the course.

"Science: Out of this World" is the creation of the Space Science Group at NSU whose mission is to develop and implement programs which use aspects of the space program to motivate students to study math and science. "Science: Out of this World" is a distance learning course for middle school students that emphasizes general academic skills such as writing and note taking plus it teaches teamwork and group problem solving skills. It is offered by television or computer delivery.

The Space Science Group's web page, with information on all of the SSG's programs, can be found at http://www.spacesciencegroup.nsula.edu.
