NATCHITOCHES-A recital featuring flutist Richard Soule of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas will be held at Northwestern State University Sunday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Soule will be accompanied by pianist Hui-li Chih. Admission is free and open to the public.
The program will include "Gigue" by Jean-Marie Le Clair and arranged by Georges Barrere, Bach's "Sonata in G Minor," "Syrinx (for flute Unaccompanied)" by Claude Debussy and"Prelude et Finale" by Raymond Guiot. Soule will also perform "Eight Pieces for Flute Alone" by Paul Hindemith and "Suite Paysanne Hongroise" by Bela Bartok and arranged by Paul Arma.
Soule is a founding member of the Sierra Winds and principal
flutist of the Las
Vegas Philharmonic. He is a former member of the Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra and the U.S. Naval Academy Band. As a member of the
Sierra Winds, Soule has traveled extensively throughout the U.S.
and abroad, has released three CDs for Cambria Records, and received
the 1993 Governor's Arts Award for Excellence in the Arts from
the State of Nevada. Soule has appeared with numerous orchestras
around the U.S. as a soloist and maintains an active schedule
as a recitalist and clinician.
His solo CD of American music for flute and harpsichord was recently released on the TNC label. Soule has published articles and reviews in The Flutist Quarterly, Notes: The Journal of the Music Library Association, and The Emerson Flute Forum.
Soule was elected vice president of the National Flute Association
last year and will become the organization's 27th President in
November. He is the former director of
Chamber Music Southwest and a former chair of the UNLV Department
of Music.
He is the recipient of the 2002 UNLV Distinguished Teaching Award.
Soule is a graduate
of Boston University and the Peabody Conservatory.
Chih, a native of Kobe, Japan, completed an undergraduate degree in piano at the Osaka College of Music. She earned a Master of Music degree in Accompanying at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Chih accompanied opera, musical theatre and most of the top student performers at UNLV. She has served as a staff accompanist at Southern Utah University and as a staff accompanist for the National Flute Association this past August at its convention in Washington, D.C.
