NATCHITOCHES -Northwestern State University awarded degrees to 716 graduates at its Spring Commencement Exercises held May 5 in Prather Coliseum. During the 2005-06 academic year, Northwestern conferred degrees on 1,567 students, the largest number in any academic year in the university's 122-year history.
Among the highlights was the awarding of a Bachelor of Science in Psychology to Kristen Shoemaker of Warsaw, Ind. Shoemaker was the first NSU student to earn a bachelor's degree completely online.
The commencement speakers were Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco and Chief of Staff James S. Clarke, Ph.D. An honorary doctorate of humane letters was awarded to Cheryl Reese Wilson of Alexandria, chief operating officer at Rapides Regional Medical Center.
