NATCHITOCHES- Northwestern State University awarded degrees to the largest class in school history as 683 students received degrees at its spring commencement exercises held Friday, May 10.

Four students graduated with 4.0 grade point averages and 12 others graduated summa cum laude with grade point averages of at least 3.9.

Those graduating with 4.0 averages were Xiao Chen and Marina Barakova of Natchitoches, Jeffrey P. Harman of Denham Springs and Amber Mystery Cooper of DeRidder. Other summa cum laude graduates were Debra Ann LaCour, Lyndi Eugenia Paludan and Donald Thornton, Jr., of Natchitoches, Jessica Jane Stokes of Garrison, Texas and Alyssa Rene' Hutcheson and Melissa A. Ettredge of Shreveport. Also graduating summa cum laude was Michael Callac of Slidell, Patricia Quigley of Pineville, Melody R. Heiskell of Richmond Hill, Ga., Alyson Schexnayder of Abbeville, Karen Lynne Burleson Navarro of Leesville and Kirsten Elisa Weierholt of Florien.

The commencement speaker was James K. Elrod, president and chief executive officer of Willis-Knighton Health System.

The university also awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters to Natchitoches photographer John C. Guillet, who attended Northwestern from 1945-49 and gained statewide, regional and national acclaim for his professional work.

Members of the Class of 1952 were also honored with a "Second Diploma."

Faculty marshals were Dr. Jack Wann, the 2002 recipient of the Mildred Hart Bailey Research Award and retiring faculty member Dr. Sally Hunt.
