NATCHITOCHES- Spirit group tryouts for the 2001-2002 school year at Northwestern State University will begin Saturday, April 6.

Auditions for the Demon Dazzler Dance Line will be held Saturday, April 6 in the Health and Human Performance Building beginning at 8 a.m. Registration starts at 7 a.m. Auditions will be closed to the public. The Demon Dazzlers serve as the official jazz line for Northwestern. Performing for NSU Demon football and basketball games, the Demon Dazzlers blend the styles of precision movement to produce a unique style of precision-jazz dance. During the fall semester, the line serves as an auxiliary unit of the "Spirit of Northwestern" Marching band. During the spring, the Demon Dazzlers provide halftime entertainment for Northwestern basketball games. A $500 scholarship is awarded for each semester of performance.

Tryouts for the NSU Cheerleader squad and "Vic" the Demon mascot will be held April 13-14. The NSU cheerleaders and "Vic" The Demon are the official spirit leaders and mascot for Northwestern. The cheerleader squad consists of male and female partners who perform traditional collegiate-style cheerleading at Demon athletic events to promote spirit during all home football and basketball games as well as selected away games. "Vic" the Demon is the chief spirit ambassador for Northwestern. Appearing for Demon athletic events, "Vic" also participates in pep rallies, parades and university and alumni events and makes guest appearances.

A cheerleading workshop will be held Saturday, April 13 at 8 a.m. in the Health and Human Performance Building. On Sunday, April 14, mascot auditions will begin at 8 a.m. Cheerleading auditions start at 9 a.m. Both events will be held in the Health and Human Performance Building. A $500 scholarship is awarded on a per semester performance basis for both cheerleaders and the mascot.

Those interested in becoming a member of the NSU Purple Pizazz Pom Pon Line will audition on Saturday, April 20. Registration begins at 7 a.m. in the Health and Human Performance Building. The Pom Pon line serves as a spirit hostess group, assisting the Yell Leaders in promoting spirit during Demon athletic functions. This squad performs side-line cheers, chants, and pom-dance style routines during football and basketball games. Auditions will be closed to the public. A scholarship of $450 for each semester of performance is granted to each line member.

To be eligible for auditions, all candidates must plan to enroll at NSU. Each candidate must maintain a 2.0 semester and cumulative grade point average on all academic work. Transfer and first semester students must also enter with a cumulative 2.0 grade point average.
