NATCHITOCHES- Northwestern State University will hold spring commencement exercises Friday, May 9 in Prather Coliseum.
A ceremony for graduates from the Colleges of Education, Liberal Arts and Nursing and the Graduate School will be at 10 a.m. Graduates from the College of Business, Louisiana Scholars' College, College of Science and Technology and the University College will receive diplomas at 3 p.m.
More than 650 graduates are expected to receive diplomas at the ceremony.
The commencement speaker will be Louisiana State Penitentiary warden Nathan Burl Cain. A nationally recognized leader in the field of correctional facilities, Cain has been employed by the Louisiana Department of Corrections for 27 years. He has been warden of Louisiana State Penitentiary, the state's only maximum security prison for males since 1995.
From 1981 until 1995, he was warden of Dixon Correctional Institute in Jackson, La., leading the prison to achieve its first accreditation from the American Correctional Association. Cain also served as assistant secretary for agribusiness with the Department of Corrections and director of field services for the Louisiana Farm Bureau. He has also been a member of the Louisiana Civil Service Commission since1990
Cain has been an active speaker at local, national and international events. He was an invited participant at the International Workshop on Psychopaths and Serial Killers sponsored by the Queen Sofia Center for the Study of Violence in Valencia, Spain. Cain was the keynote speaker at the Annual Training Conference of the Correctional Accreditation Managers Association and has also spoken at the Academy of Criminal Justice Science Annual Conference.
