The Space Science Group's mission is to develop and implement programs which use aspects of the space program to motivate students to study math and science. The web site offers information on SSG programs including Camp Discovery, Science out of this World, Operation ADD-vantage, Globe/NOVA and JOVE. It also has a link designed for teacher in-service.
Camp Discovery is a week long summer camp for students ages 10-14 and for high school students in grades 9-12 where the excitement of space and science can be discovered through safe, fun, hands-on learning activities. Science out of this World is a distance learning course for middle schools students designed to motivate students to learn science. The course is offered by televised or computer delivery and emphasizes general academic skills such as writing and note taking plus it teaches teamwork and group problem solving skills.
Operation ADD-vantage is an experiential educational program that builds self-confidence, teamwork and group problem solving skills through a variety of highly structured challenges. The JOVE (Joint venture with NASA) program gives Northwestern students a chance to work on actual NASA projects conducting useful undergraduate research.
