                                             FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES - Some Northwestern State University staff members will have the option beginning this summer of working four-day weeks to help offset soaring travel costs,  according to NSU president Dr. Randall Webb.

Webb said the more flexible work schedule will not affect faculty members whose teaching assignments have already been established for the Fall semester.  He also stated that university offices and facilities will remain open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and that no services or programs will be curtailed as a result of revised schedules.

“We are aware of the impact of soaring gasoline costs on our employees,” Webb said.  “Adopting a modified work schedule could help ease the financial burden on personnel who have a significant commute each day.  Northwestern is joining other universities across the state in adopting more flexible work schedules to assist employees.”

The NSU president said supervisors of each department will be responsible for developing work schedules that will allow some personnel to work four 10-hour days and still assure that Monday through Friday operations are not interrupted.

“Our primary concern and responsibility is to meet the needs of students,” Webb said.  “In adopting a more flexible schedule, we will still be sure that employees are available to assist our students that have questions or concerns.”

He emphasized that work schedule changes are optional and that NSU personnel can maintain current schedules if desired.
