NATCHITOCHES - Fifteen Northwestern State University faculty members have received tenure and 21 faculty have earned a promotion in rank effective with the start of the 2006-2007 academic year, according to Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Thomas Hanson.
Those receiving tenure were: Dr. Rae Osborn of the Department of Biological Sciences, Dr. William Lomerson, Dr. Pam Miller and Dr. Richard Tarver of the College of Business, Dr. Walter Flomer, Dr. Andrew Ludu and Dr. Gillian Rudd of the Department of Chemistry and Physics and Bobby Nowlin of the Department of Engineering Technology.
Also granted tenure were Dr. Paula Furr of the Department of Journalism, Dr. Dorothy Hubbard and Dana George Roe of the College of Nursing, Dr. Brenda Hanson and Dr. Karen McFerrin of the College of Education, Dr. Kent Hare of the School of Social Sciences and Barbara Pierce of the Department of Social Work.
Tenure is a status granted to faculty after a trial period. Faculty are protected from summary dismissal by tenure.
Non-tenured tenure-track faculty are reviewed by a tenure committee in each department or college annually and are normally reviewed for tenure after six years. In exceptional cases, tenure may be recommended earlier. The recommendations of the committee are forwarded to the department head or dean, the vice president for academic affairs and the university president.
Faculty promoted to full professor were Dr. Barbara Duchardt of the College of Education, Dr. Steven Horton of the Department of Journalism, Dr. Susan Pierce of the College of Nursing and Dr. Brenda Woodard of the Department of Biological Sciences.
Promoted to associate professor were: Dr. Christine Allen of the Mrs. H.D. Dear Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts, Mary Beth Brocato of the Department of Journalism, Linda Cox and Mary Lynn Wernet of Watson Library, Dr. Tommy Hailey of the School of Social Sciences, Dr. Julie McDonald of the College of Business, Debra Shelton of the College of Nursing, Hanson, Hare, Nowlin, Osborn, Pierce and Tarver.
Those promoted to assistant professor were John Byrd of the Department of Biological Sciences, Dr. Leonard Clark of the College of Education, Brooks DeFee of the School of Creative and Performing Arts and Dr. Charles Pellegrin of the School of Social Sciences.
