FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES - Three major productions will highlight the spring 2001 schedule for the NSU Theatre.
The spring semester will begin with Samuel Beckett's absurdist play, "Waiting for Godot" Feb. 14-17. The play will be directed by Scott Burrell and will be presented in an unusual setting, the foyer of the Orville G. Hanchey Art Gallery.
"Waiting for Godot" is the tale of the nonsensical nature of human existence as seen through the foolish attempts to fill time by two clowns who are waiting for a meaningful meeting with a certain "Godot."
The play will be closely followed by Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" Feb. 20-23 in Theatre West. The production follows the frustrations of young Tom (a thinly veiled Williams) as he tries to break free of a stifling yet magnetic home situation which calls for his aid. In this play, director Dr. Vicki Parrish will introduce the audience to Tom's mother Amanda, his fragile sister Laura and a "gentleman caller" who provides a moment of hope to a family at a time of crisis.
This spring's main stage production will be "Kismet," a musical based on "The Arabian Nights." The play, set for April 24-27, will be a collaboration between the NSU Theatre, Natchitoches/Northwestern Symphony Orchestra, NSU Opera Theatre and music program. "Kismet" was written by Wright and Forrest and tells the tales of adventure of a wandering poet and his daughter and what the fates provide for them. The musical includes memorable songs such as "Baubles, Bangles and Beads," "Stranger in Paradise" and "And This is My Beloved."
In addition, Associate Professor of Dance Ed Brazo will tour with his newly-formed Dance Ensemble. Brazo will also choreograph and stage the annual Miss Northwestern-Lady of the Bracelet Pageant. Coordinator of Theatre Dr. Jack Wann will book regional appearances for his "Shakesperience" troupe and coordinate the Musical Theatre Workshop. The workshop will present three "Caberet Nights" in the Loft Theatre. Wann will also direct a Loft Producton of John Pielmeier's "Agnes of God." Burrell has also formed an improvisational group "Out on a Limb."
