NATCHITOCHES - Dr. John Tollett has been named dean of education at Northwestern State University, according to Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Thomas A. Burns. His appointment has been approved by the Board of Trustees for the University of Louisiana System. Tollett has served as acting dean of education since June 1997.
"I believe that John brings to the College of Education a true perspective of teaching in the public schools," said Burns. "Having served as a teacher, principal and superintendent his experiences will provide the practical aspects for teacher education and training. There is nothing in the world like having a person in a leadership role who has the experience to show others the way."
Tollett has been a member of Northwestern's faculty since 1993. He came to Northwestern after two years as superintendent of schools in Bienville Parish and four years as superintendent of schools in Jackson Parish.
Before becoming superintendent, Tollett was supervisor of public relations, guidance and testing with the Monroe City School Board. He has also served as a principal at Carroll Junior High and Lee Junior High. Tollett was an adjunct professor and graduate teaching assistant at Northeast Louisiana University and a mathematics teacher in the Monroe City and East Baton Rouge Parish School system.
An expert on state school finance and the work of school principals and administrators, Tollett has made professional presentations and published research articles in the areas of educational law and distance learning. He earned his bachelor's degree at Louisiana State University and his master's degree and doctorate at Northeast Louisiana University.
