NATCHITOCHES- Vandebilt Catholic of Houma successfully defended its title at the 11th annual High School Quiz Bowl State Championship held at Northwestern State University Saturday. As state champions, Vandebilt Catholic received the Jerry Hickman Award and will represent the state of Louisiana in the Panasonic Academic Challenge in June in Orlando.

Vandebilt Catholic, the Division II champion, defeated Division IV champion St. Mary's of Natchitoches to win its second state title in a row. Vandebilt beat Division I winner Jesuit of New Orleans to advance to the finals. St. Mary's defeated Division III champion Cedar Creek of Ruston in the semifinals.

Members of the winning team were Andrew Dunckelman, Robin Davis, Tanner Freeman, Ryan Sullivant, Kristina VanHeeswijk and Stephanie Cannon. Byron Robichaux is the coach.

Students from 32 high schools representing all areas of the state competed in the tournament which is sponsored by the Louisiana Association for Academic Competition.
