NATCHITOCHES - Dr. Dan Seymour has been appointed vice president for student affairs at Northwestern State University, according to Northwestern President Dr. Randall J. Webb. His appointment has been approved by the University of Louisiana System Board of Trustees. Seymour has served as acting vice president for student affairs since January.
"I feel Dr. Seymour will bring excellent leadership to the Division of Student Affairs," said Webb. "He holds the earned doctorate in higher education and college personnel administration and is a licensed professional counselor. He has extensive professional experience in his field and possibly is the only Northwestern employee ever to serve in positions at the main campus and each of our three satellite campuses in Shreveport, Leesville and Alexandria."
Over the past six months, Seymour has taken several steps to improve student retention and attract new students to NSU. He has overseen improvements in campus residence halls. Those improvements include a renovation of Sabine Hall and refurbishing of residence hall lobbies. Seymour also created a task force which is developing a five-year plan to introduce technology into the dormitories.
While serving as acting vice president, he also helped develop the ACCENT Program which brought tutoring and counseling services into Rapides Hall. Seymour also helped create the Strategic Telemarketing and Recruiting (STAR) Plan to help attract new students. He also developed a new Housing Exemption Program to encourage students to live in campus residence halls.
Seymour was executive director of academic and student services at Northwestern State University's College of Nursing in Shreveport from August 1996 until January. As executive director, Seymour set up an orientation program for first-time students on the Shreveport campus. He also assisted with the development of a technology plan for the Shreveport campus resulting in the establishment of a new computer lab for student use.
Seymour was an instructor of psychology and education and coordinator of the European Travel Program at Bossier Parish Community College from 1992 until 1996. He was also director of the Southern Association on Colleges and Schools Self-Study Program at BPCC.
Seymour earned both a bachelor's and master's degree at NSU. He also did post graduate study in education, psychology and counseling and guidance at Northwestern. Seymour received a doctorate in higher education administration at the University of Mississippi.
He was at Northwestern for 16 years as a coordinator/counselor in the Division of Continuing Education from 1973 to 1978, director of high school relations and admissions from 1978 to 1983 and director of the Center for Career Planning, Placement and Counseling from 1983 to 1989.
He joined the staff of Centenary College in 1989 as dean of students and a lecturer in the Graduate Division of Education. Seymour continued as a lecturer at Centenary after moving to BPCC. He was also an adjunct professor of education in the Department of Educational Leadership at Louisiana Tech.
A native of Plaquemine, he is a graduate of Terrebonne High School in Houma. Seymour is married to Dr. Cathleen Reed Seymour. They have two children.
