FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES -NSU student Rick Loeffler has been named as the recipient of the Weaver Family Scholarship for Excellence in general studies by the University College.
After becoming displaced by a company he worked for in Wisconsin, Loeffler followed his daughter, Marie, to NSU to complete his degree he started on years ago.
"My daughter came to NSU on a violin scholarship," said Loeffler. "I wanted to get my bachelor's degree and I found a way to do it."
Loeffler began taking courses in Spring 2002 and has maintained an "A" average. He will graduate with a degree in general studies next week.
"I was totally shocked to win the scholarship," said Loeffler. "I wasn't working towards winning a scholarship. I was just working on getting good grades."
"It has been a real joy to work with a student like Rick," said Steve Hicks, advisor and instructor in the University College. "His desire is to learn not just trudge through. Rick has a real passion for learning and a real thirst for knowledge."
"Rick Loeffler epitomizes the high achievement and goal-directedness
of
the best nontraditional students, for whom the Weaver Family scholarship
was designed," said Dr. Sue Weaver, dean of University College.
