NATCHITOCHES A week of activities are planned to help Northwestern State University students get the academic year off to a good start. The annual Week of Welcome on Aug. 21-27 will help students learn about campus services and university academics along with plenty of opportunities to meet fellow students.
The activities are sponsored by NSU's Office of Student Activities and Organizations and the Week of Welcome Committee.
Events begin Sunday, Aug. 21 at noon when the Northwestern community along with the people of Natchitoches pitch in to help students move into campus residence halls. At 5 p.m., a picnic for students and their families will be held outside Iberville Dining Hall.
New student orientation will be held Monday, Aug. 22 at 8:30 a.m. in Magale Recital Hall. That evening at 9 p.m., the movie The Longest Yard will be shown in the Friedman Student Union Ballroom.
Tuesday will feature a full day of events starting at 11 a.m. when students can attend their respective College's Academic Convocation.
At 1:30 p.m., the official grand opening of the $6.9 million Wellness, Recreation and Activity Center will be held. The WRAC was built with funds provided by a student self-assessment fee and features equipment and facilities to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Students can enjoy a cookout at College Ave. United Methodist Church at 5:30 p.m. Those living in the campus residence halls can enjoy an ice cream social at 6 p.m. Also at 6 p.m., the University Columns Apartments will hold a street dance for its residents.
Classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 24. NSU students, faculty and staff will be posted throughout campus to help students find their classes on that hectic first day as part of "Demons on Tour." At 7 p.m., Northwestern's campus ministries will hold worship services.
"Demons on Tour" will continue Thursday morning. A block party will start at noon at the Student Union.
Saturday will be "Destination Downtown" as a number
of merchants in downtown Natchitoches will have specials to encourage
students to check out the variety of stores and shops in Natchitoches.
