Northwestern State University News Bureau
What we do in the News Bureau:
- Inform the public about upcoming events of community interest
by submitting information to the media
- Notify the media of events they may want to cover
- Develop feature stories highlighting Northwestern programs
and people and contact appropriate media
- Answer media questions about NSU, its people, and its projects
- Help all areas of the university develop ongoing media plans
to inform the public about programs and projects
We need you to keep us informed of your programs, achievements,
research efforts, and activities. Early notice is important.
The sooner we know, the more effectively we can plan and implement
a promotional strategy.
Faculty Experts
The media often call to locate faculty members who can speak
about events and issues in the news. Please keep this office
informed of your current research so we can respond to requests
for experts. We are also looking for faculty who are willing
to write op-ed pieces for regional newspapers on their area of
expertise.
Timing of Announcements
Early event information is particularly important when listing
activities. To meet the calendar deadlines of most papers, we
need to mail a release or announcement about two to four weeks
in advance of an event. Newspapers print calendar information
about a week or less before the event is scheduled. Please call
us early in the planning stages of your event. We can help you
plan an event in a way that will make it more likely to be covered.
Media Coverage of an Event
Media can be invited to cover and will sometimes cover an
event. The media are interested in stories that will appeal to
their audience. Trade or specialty publications may be interested
in your event, and we can help you identify potential outlets.
Please let us know when you have something that may be of interest
so we can let the media and the general public know.
Feature Stories
The media are always looking for good human interest stories,
and the college campus is a great place to find them. Please
keep us informed about interesting faculty and student stories
and activities. Interesting course offerings or projects can
also provide good stories.
While we will make every effort to publicize your story, we cannot
guarantee placement of your story or announcement because that
decision is made by the newspaper, magazine, or station. However,
we will work as closely as possible with you and with the media
to ensure appropriate coverage of your story.
