FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES Mezzo-soprano Katherine Sherwood White and bass-baritone Edward White, Jr. will present a voice recital at Northwestern State University Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. Pianist Betsy Widhalm will be the accompanist.

Katherine Sherwood White is a 1999 graduate of NSU where she studied voice with Phyllis Seigler. She married Edward White, Jr. in 2003. They live in New Orleans and are each doctoral students at the University of Kentucky.

Since graduating, Katherine White has performed major operatic roles with Texas Opera Theater, Central City Opera, and Kentucky Opera Theater, including the title role in Handel's "Rinaldo," Nerone in "L'Incoronatione di Poppea," Cherubino in "Le Nozze di Figaro" and the Mother in "Amahl and the Night Visitors." Other roles include Mercedes in "Carmen," Mrs. Olsen in "Street Scene" and Mrs. Segstrom in "A Little Night Music." As a soloist, Mrs. White has performed works such as Mozart's "Requiem" and Vivaldi's "Gloria" with churches throughout the southeast.

Her performance as Mercedes won the award for most Outstanding Studio Artist at Central City Opera.

Edward White, Jr., is an active performer in opera, oratorio and musical theater. Some of his roles include: Figaro in "Le Nozze di Figaro," Don Alfonso in "Cosi fan tutte," Masetto in "Don Giovanni," Rev. Olin Blitch in "Susannah" and Frank Maurrant in "Street Scene." He has also performed the roles of The Father in "Hansel and Gretel," Seneca in "L'Incoronatione di Poppea," Frank in "Die Fledermaus," and Fredrick Egerman in "A Little Night Music." As a bass soloist, White has performed works such as Handel's "Messiah," Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony," Mozart's "Requiem" and Bach's "B-Minor Mass."

The Whites each received their master's degree at the University of Texas. They are involved in the music programs of many churches in the area, and are active recitalists throughout the southeast. They hope to maintain an active performing career, and to one day teach voice on the collegiate level.

The first half of the recital features Italian love songs and duets, German songs, and operatic selections from "Carmen" and "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart. The second half of the recital features American art songs of the 20th century.
