NATCHITOCHES - Women education majors attending Northwestern State University holding a junior status and a 3.0 grade point average by fall 1998 are eligible to apply for the Catherine and Mary Winters Scholarship through Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
Catherine Winters taught history at NSU from 1926 until her retirement in 1954. She died in September of 1974. While serving on the NSU faculty, Winters was instrumental in the organization of the Purple Jackets club in 1926. The group is the oldest service organization for women on the NSU campus. Winters was also one of the state founders of Delta Kappa Gamma and was a charter member and assisted in organizing Epsilon Chapter in Natchitoches in 1936. Mary Winters is Catherine Winters sister.
Applications may be obtained in the teacher education office at NSU. Two professional/academic references are necessary. Applications and references must be postmarked by February 12, 1998.
