FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES- "Dreams and Symbols," an exhibition of paintings by Shreveport artist Jerry Wray, will open Thursday, Feb. 26, in the Orville J. Hanchey Gallery at Northwestern State University. Wray will give a talk at 7 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall.
Wray says that her "intuitive way of painting" is in keeping with her study of the philosophy and symbols of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung, although her work incorporates personal symbolism as well. "Dreams and Symbols" includes portions of four consecutive series by the artist including "Inside Looking Out, "Dream Fragments," "Children's Fairy Tales and Children's Stories" and "Abstract Symbolism." In addition, a sample of new work from her recently begun series based on prehistoric cave visits in France last summer will also be shown.
Her talk on her connection to Jungian ideas and spiritual expression will be followed by a reception for the artist. The event, which is open to the public, is being co-sponsored by the Louisiana Scholars' College.
Wray received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Newcomb College of Tulane University. After earning her degree, she commenced a career in painting, primarily in media such as watercolor, gouache, acrylics and collage with emphasis on color and abstract imagery.
A member of several prominent watercolor societies and the International Society of Experimental Artists, she teaches workshops and classes in her Shreveport studio. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, and Wray's work is included in several public and private collections.
