Associate of Science in Nursing

This is a two- year program leading to an Associate of Science in Nursing degree. It is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006, telephone number 800-669-1656 ,  www.NLNAC.org and approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, 17373 Perkins Road,  Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70810, telephone number 225-755-7500,  fax number 225-755-7564,  www.lsbn.state.la.us.

Purpose
The purpose of the Associate of Science in Nursing program is to provide education experiences and opportunities, which enable individuals to practice nursing within the identified roles of the associate degree nurse. General academic courses in English, Mathematics, Social and Natural Sciences provide the foundation for the nursing courses. Upon completion of the course of study, the graduate is eligible to take the National Council for Licensure Exam for R.N. (NCLEX-RN).

Program Objectives
Graduates of the Associate of Science in Nursing Program of the College of Nursing will be prepared to:

 

1.       Provide nursing care founded upon selected scientific principles and evidence based research utilizing the nursing process.

2.       Perform caring interventions which assist the person to achieve dynamic equilibrium by facilitating the satisfactions of needs.

3.       Communicate effectively to the person and health care team members to promote, maintain and restore health.

4.       Provide health education to reduce risk, promote, and maintain optimal health.

5.       Manage nursing care effectively utilizing human, physical, financial, and technological resources to meet the needs of the person.

6.       Demonstrate professional behaviors including adherence to standards of practice and legal and ethical codes of nursing conduct and accountability to the profession of nursing and society.

 


Admission Requirements
The prospective student must submit the following materials to arrive at least nine weeks before registration to the:

Northwestern State University
Natchitoches, Louisiana 71497

 

1. An Application for Admission with appropriate fee.

2. Official transcripts from all universities attended to the Office of the Registrar, Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, LA 71497 and to the College of Nursing, 1800 Line Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71101-4653.

3. All Freshmen and transfer applicants with fewer than three credit hours in English composition and three credits in college mathematics beyond the developmental level must submit scores from the ACT assessment.

Enrollment in Nursing Courses
Admission to the University does not guarantee enrollment in nursing courses. Selection for enrollment in nursing courses is on a competitive basis for available spaces. Students must meet the minimum criteria to be considered for selection for enrollment in nursing courses.

  1. Admission to the University and submission of all official transcripts to the Office of the Registrar on the Natchitoches Campus.

2. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above.

3. A minimum grade of “C” in all required biology, chemistry, math and nursing courses.

4. Completion of pre-requisite general academic courses toward the degree.
a. ASN Program – first semester of curriculum pattern
b. BSN Program – first three semesters of curriculum pattern

5. Minimum gr
ade point average of 2.7 in general academic courses completed that are required for degree excluding electives

6. Completion of required entrance exams for Nursing.

7. Completion of an Application to Enroll in Nursing Courses Form including:
a. Copy of scores on required entrance exams for Nursing.
b. Verification of Licensure as a health care provider (if applicable).
c. Response to any Request for Waiver of Policy (if applicable).
d. Final order of the Louisiana State Board of Nursing (if applicable).

8. Completion of required c
riteria and submission of completed Application to Enroll in Clinical Nursing Courses in the Office of the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Nursing by CERTIFIED MAIL no later than the following deadlines:
a. Fall enrollment – May 31.
b. Spring enrollment – August 31.


9. An application to enroll in nursing courses is valid for only one semester.
10. No application to enroll in nursing courses will be accepted after the designated deadlines!
