Bachelor of Science in Nursing

This is a four year program for students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. The program is approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, 17373 Perkins Road,  Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70810, telephone number 225-755-7500,  fax number 225-755-7564, www.lsbn.state.la.us. and was the first program in Louisiana to be accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission  and BSN program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530

Purpose
The role of the beginning professional nurse continues to encompass three broad areas.

 

1. Provider of direct and indirect care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.

2. Designer, manager, and coordinator of care.

3. Member of a profession.


Program Objectives
To implement the role of the beginning professional nurse which includes providing care for individuals, families, groups, and communities the graduate will be able to:

  1. Integrate theory from nursing, the arts, humanities, and sciences to provide culturally sensitive care in the global community.

2. Apply the nursing process using critical thinking, communication, assessment, and technical skills.

3.Collaborate with clients and other members of the interdisciplinary health care team for health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention, disease management, and health restoration.

4. Utilize information and health care technologies in nursing practice.

5. Integrate research findings to promote evidence based nursing practice.

6. Incorporate knowledge of economic, legal, ethical, and political factors influencing health care systems and policy to advocate for recipients of nursing care.

7. Apply principles of leadership to design, manage, coordinate, and evaluate health care delivery.

8. Demonstrate professional nursing standards, values, and accountability.

9. Assume responsibility for professional development and lifelong learning.

Admission Requirements
The prospective student must submit the following materials to arrive at least nine weeks before registration to the:

Office of Registrar
Northwestern State University
Natchitoches, Louisiana 7149

 

1. An Application for Admission with appropriate fee.

2. Official transcripts from all universities attended to the Office of the Registrar, Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, LA 71497 and to the College of Nursing, 1800 Line Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71101-4653.

3. All Freshmen and transfer applicants with fewer than three credit hours in English composition and three credits in college mathematics beyond the developmental level must submit scores from the ACT assessment.

Enrollment in Nursing Courses
Admission to the University does not guarantee enrollment in nursing courses. Selection for enrollment in nursing courses is on a competitive basis for available spaces. Students must meet the minimum criteria to be considered for selection for enrollment in nursing courses:

  1. Admission to the University and submission of all official transcripts to the Office of the Registrar on the Natchitoches Campus.

2. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above.

3. A minimum grade of “C” in all required biology, chemistry, math and nursing courses.

4. Completion of pre-requisite general academic courses toward the degree.
a. ASN Program – first semester of curriculum pattern
b. BSN Program – first three semesters of curriculum pattern


5. Minimum grade point average of 2.7 in general academic courses completed that are required for degree excluding electives.

6. Completion of required entrance exams for Nursing.

7. Completion of an Application to Enroll in Nursing Courses Form including:
a. Copy of scores on required entrance exams for Nursing.
b. Verification of Licensure as a health care provider (if applicable).
c. Response to any Request for Waiver of Policy (if applicable).
d. Final order of the Louisiana State Board of Nursing (if applicable).

. Completion of required criteria and submission of com
pleted Application to Enroll in Clinical Nursing Courses in the Office of the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Nursing by CERTIFIED MAIL no later than the following deadlines:
a. Fall enrollment – May 31.
b. Spring enrollment – August 31.


9. An application to enroll in nursing courses is valid for only one semester.
10. No application to enroll in nursing courses will be accepted after the designated deadlines!
