Internships
Louisiana Scholars' College
Mandy Cason at her internship
Students in all degree plans are encouraged to consider including one or more summer internships as part of their academic career.  Journalism majors are required to complete an internship as part of their programs. Students majoring in Computer Information Systems can receive credit for an advanced CIS elective by completing an internship and project.

Besides providing insight into a profession, an internship can give you access to outstanding research collections and facilities, a better understanding of business or governmental agencies, the opportunity to learn new techniques, and a chance to interact with faculty outside the College.  Some students use their internships to complete the research component of their senior thesis.  Some want additional hands-on practice to complement their classroom experience. Others view this as an opportunity to determine whether they want to pursue graduate studies.

Summer internships have had an unexpected outcome for many of our students.  Working with students from colleges and universities across the nation, they discover just how exceptional their education at the Scholars' College has been.  This confidence boost has led many to stretch themselves to achieve even more than they had thought possible as an undergraduate.

Although most programs are meant for students entering their junior or senior year, opportunities also exist for rising sophomores.  Students hoping to make a strong application for national scholarship competitions, such as the Goldwater, Marshall, Rhodes, or Truman Scholarships, are advised to participate in at least one internship.

Most internships in the sciences are paid positions and may also include housing or a housing allowance.  The National Science Foundation funds a number of Research Experiences for Undergraduates programs across the nation, each with its own emphasis.  Programs are generally announced in January or February, with applications due soon after.  Other federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense, have science internships each year which have accepted Scholars' College students in the past.

Programs in the arts, social sciences and humanities are more likely to be volunteer positions, although some include stipends.  Scholars' College students have interned with the President's Committee on Humanities and the Arts, the State Department, and Boston Museum, among others.

Can't find an internship in your field or one that fits your schedule?  Some summer jobs or volunteer activities can be internship equivalents.  For instance, an education major may teach at a summer camp or a pre-medical student may work in a doctor's office or volunteer at the local emergency room or Health Unit.  Anthropology students have participated in archeological digs and history majors have worked for the Creole Heritage Center. Theater students often build their portfolios by performing in summer stock productions.  Be creative, but remember to document your learning activities and academic products.
