The typical Scholars' College student will take between 50% and 100% of their classes within the College, depending upon their interests and major focus. Our average class size is 15. The largest Scholars' College class that any person will attend is the Texts & Traditions lecture, which includes your entire class; the class is broken into smaller sections for discussion (left). Other classes are built around the seminar format, and are much smaller (usually no more than 20) to facilitate discussion. Seminar classes emphasize critical reading and discussion of primary texts (or translations of those texts) under the direction of a faculty member. Many classes are interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary and draw connections between diverse fields of knowledge.
Are our classes harder than traditional university classes? That depends largely on your learning style. LSC students have increased responsibility for their own learning experience. Students are expected to come to class prepared to actively participate in classroom discussions rather than just listen and take notes. In addition to participation, most classes are evaluated on papers and essay exams rather than multiple-choice tests. Questions are often open-ended with multiple correct answers. Since we teach critical thinking, students are presented with multiple perspectives and conflicting theories and are expected to support their own opinions with evidence and carefully reasoned arguments. |
Our faculty for freshmen: All of our faculty hold the Ph.D and regularly teach freshman and sophomore classes, as well as direct individual students in independent study and thesis work. You will not be taught by graduate students. You will not be sent to a general advising center. You will be taught and mentored by the faculty we brag about.
The faculty/student relationship is one of our strongest features, almost always mentioned by graduating seniors as one of the most important parts of their college experience. Our faculty are always ready to help a student with assignments, or just to talk -- they've devoted their lives to teaching, and their desire to help students really shines through here at Scholars'. Each professor has extensive office hours, and many of them invite groups of students to their homes for informal study sessions or special events.

| Our Student Body: Our students come from a variety of backgrounds: small towns, big cities; public, private, and parochial schools. Although most of our students entered the College directly from high school, we do have a few non-traditional students, as well as students who were home-schooled or who received the GED. Most students come from here in LA, but we have had a number from all over the world: Bosnia, Bulgaria, Ghana, Ukraine, Russia, California, Germany, Illinois, Colorado, Texas, California, Nebraska, South Carolina, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, India, Arkansas, and New Mexico. |
