Now that you are part of the Scholars' College, make sure to take advantage of the different opportunities the Scholars' College and Northwestern have to offer:
Academics and Academic Resources
Study Abroad
Northwestern State University is a member of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP). This program allows all NSU/LSC students the opportunity to study for the same cost (tuition, fees, room and board) as a regular semester here! Interested? Go to the ISEP website and begin exploring the possibilities!
Dr. Jensen's Italy Trip--Summer 2008

Volunteer Opportunities
NSU Tutors:
NSU Tutors is a service club that promotes scholarship and volunteerism. Moderated by Dr. Jean D’Amato, members tutor elementary-aged school children at Natchitoches Magnet School. The magnet school is comprised of students from kindergarten to eighth grade, giving a tutor the opportunity to choose which age level and subject he or she wishes to tutor.
Tutoring begins after Labor Day to give the students a chance to settle in. Tutors work with the students one to Monday through Friday from 1:50- 2:40. Members can choose which days they would work with the students, but the club asks that once a member makes a commitment, he or she must stick to it. Anyone can join the club, being an education major is not necessary. Other than commitment to the program, the club asks for “good” students who understand enough elementary material to actually help students in need.
If you are interested in joining NSU Tutors or have any further questions about the program, please contact Stacy Meyers at smeyers001@student.nsula.edu.
Habitat for Humanity (updated!!)
Habitat meets the 2nd Monday of each month at Mike Murphy's State Farm Office (2nd Street) at 5:30 p.m
On Nov. 3rd, Habitat is beginning a house. They need volunteers to dig the footings for the foundation and provide all sorts of support help for those doing the work. Volunteer applications are available in the Student Lounge. Please complete and turn in your application to Davina by Oct. 12th. They are asking that you commit to a 3 hr. shift.
School Supply Project for Afghanistan (just added)
Debbie Waskom was listed in a July 26 NatchTimes article about a Natchitoches soldier in Afghanistan who is collecting school supplies for Afghani schools. She told me he's there for another 10 months, so the project is ongoing. Today they shipped the first shipment of 20 boxes of supplies. She also said there's an update in today's NatchTimes -- what they're hoping for now are supplies for teachers. No specifics but let's put our heads together I'm sure we can come up with a way to help, either via fund-raising or something.
