Our university:

The Louisiana Scholars' College is located on the main campus of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.  We are one of seven undergraduate colleges on campus.  NSU also has satellite campuses in Shreveport, Leesville/Fort Polk, and Alexandria and extension offices in several other cities.

In addition to the Scholars' College, Northwestern's program in Computer Information Systems and the School of Creative and Performing Arts are Areas of Excellence for the University of Louisiana System.

Our facilities:

Morrison Hall is the home to the Scholars' College.  Here you will find faculty offices, classrooms, a newcomputer lab, and a foreign language facility.  We even have an outdoor classroom beneath the live oaks inour quad where you can sit in comfort during your discussion classes on warm spring days.

Chemistry labs are housed next door in Fournet

Hall, while biology and ecology labs are taught in Kyser Hall.

Our city, Natchitoches, Louisiana:

Natchitoches (Na - kuh - tish) is located in the northwestern part of Louisiana just off Interstate 49 about halfway between Shreveport and Alexandria, Louisiana. This historic town of about 17,000 is the oldestpermanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. Of course, this means there are plenty of ante-bellum homes plus Fort St. Jean Baptiste and other interesting places to visit. Thereare a number of festivals held in Natchitoches and surrounding parishes throughout the year, and from Thanksgiving to New Year's the town is decked out for the Christmas Festival.

Living in Natchitoches:

Natchitoches is a true college town where the university and its organizations play a major role. The campus stretches along the main traffic artery connecting Natchitoches to I-49 and abuts the historic district. In fact, part of campus is on the National Register of Historic Places. Businesses located in the area surrounding campus include banks, a major supermarket, a home-town pharmacy, two fast-food restaurants, a health club and a bookstore, and that favorite student hangout, a coffeehouse.

The main business district with more banks, restaurants, shops, and a variety of churches is just a few minutes' walk from the dorm. More grocery stores, fast-food chains, and video rentals are only a hop, skip & a jump away just across the Cane River Lake. A trip to WalMart or the movies requires a bicycle or car, but these are frequent student destinations, so it's not hard to find a ride.

Community support for the University is apparent in the attendance at concerts, plays, special lectures, and athletic events.  Front Street downtown is closed off after home football games for "Boogie on the Bricks", a giant street party.  Each year the Natchitoches Christmas Festival begins with Northwestern's Christmas Gala, a showcase for NSU's School of Creative and Performing Arts.  Attendance at this event has grown so much in the past few years that in addition to a special matinee for local school children, a second evening performance has been added to accommodate the crowds.

Safety on campus and in town

Natchitoches is also a tourist town, and safety is a priority for our community. Northwestern is separated from the rest of the city by Chaplain's Lake, undeveloped land, and College Avenue, so there is very little outside traffic through the campus. The University has gates which are locked at night and its own police force to protect students and property and to deal with campus disturbances such as petty thefts, disorderly individuals, and football crowds.  Campus police are always available to deal with students' safety concerns, including escorts between buildings after hours.
