LSC students, explain student government opportunities to SOR 1010

SOR 1010 is designed to help incoming students acclimate to Northwestern and to Scholars' College and to begin developing a sense of community with their colleagues, both their fellow incoming freshmen and students returning to the College as sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Course Objectives: This course should enable students to...

  1. understand the Scholars' College core curriculum and make appropriate choices to fulfill these requirements.
  2. understand the concentration and majors options.
  3. identify and use appropriate sources of academic advice, including their advisor(s), professors, the NSU catalog, the Curricular Guide, and their peers.
  4. be aware of and meet university and College deadlines for registration, drop-add, and graduation, and others.
  5. adapt to the discussion styles of Texts and Traditions and the Science Seminars.
  6. choose appropriate strategies for time management and balancing extracurricular activities, academics, and wellness concerns.
  7. register for Fall Semester, if they have not already done so.
  8. work within established procedures to resolve academic, administrative, and student life problems.
  9. appreciate and become involved in Northwestern and Scholars' College traditions.
  10.   become familiar with key offices on the Northwestern campus, such as the Registrar, Counseling Services, Financial Aid, Student Employment and others.

This course is pass/no pass, with attendance at all sessions required.  Students also enrolled in marching band or participating in Greek recruitment activities should contact  Dr. McClain in advance to arrange to make up any missed sessions.

The 2008 Scholars' Orientation begins with move-in at University Place on Thursday, August 21. Check-in is from 10am to 2pm. The Louisiana Scholars' College Opening Convocation follows at 3:00 pm in 227 Morrison Hall.

Students should come prepared to pay for their meals until they complete the fee payment process and meal plans start on Monday, August 25th.
