The Honor Code of the Louisiana Scholars’ College, Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, Louisiana
The community of students, faculty, and staff in the Louisiana Scholars’ College trusts that its members will act honorably in every endeavor. For this reason, we have developed an honor code that promotes responsibility for our education and also directly involves the students, faculty, and staff in the creation and maintenance of such a community. This code represents a voluntary and internal mechanism, separate from state and university regulations, for maintaining and enforcing the highest ideals of honor. In such an atmosphere of personal and communal integrity, we assume that students neither give nor receive unauthorized aid on graded assignments. In affirmation of their honor in these matters, students’ signatures on all work will indicate that they have neither given nor received unauthorized aid, nor observed others doing so. Plagiarism, cheating on examinations, and other violations of academic integrity do not promote the ideals of a community dedicated to high standards of intellectual responsibility. In other areas of campus life, moreover, students, faculty, and staff in the College community are expected to meet similar high standards: each student must respect the rights of others, striving always to uphold those principles of responsible citizenship on which the College depends. All members of the community are considered representatives of the College and are expected to uphold the highest standards of honor both on and off campus at all times during their official association with the Louisiana Scholars’ College. I understand the importance of academic integrity: I will neither give nor receive unauthorized aid on graded projects, such aid including plagiarism, the use of other persons’ words or ideas as my own, and cheating, giving or receiving information on examinations. I recognize the importance of honorable behavior in campus life, and I will not tolerate conduct that is detrimental to the College community, such behavior including but not limited to discourtesy, stealing, lying, and inordinate abuse of alcohol or other drugs; nor will I permit harassment of others because of their religion, gender, sexual preference, political ideas, physical condition, ethnic origin, or skin color. The College community understands that the purpose of the Code is to prevent transgressions rather than promote punishment. In recognition of my support for the ideals of the College and my responsibility to fellow members of the community, I will act upon any suspected violation of the Honor Code by discouraging any behavior that seems likely to result in a violation of the Honor Code. I also acknowledge that my responsibility to the College community may require me to report transgressions of the Honor Code. As a continuing reminder of the ideals stated in the Honor Code and as an indication of my support for these ideals, I will abide by the following procedures: 1) On all essays, term papers, reports, senior theses, and other work that is entirely my own, my signature at the end of my paper will signify my support of the Honor Code. 2) On preprinted materials such as major tests, I will sign my name to the following preprinted affirmation: “my signature on this paper affirms my support of the Louisiana Scholars’ College Honor Code.” 29. I certify, if applicable, that I have registered or will register with the selective service. I certify that the information given above is complete and correct, to the best of my knowledge. I understand that failure to provide complete and accurate information can lead to rejection of this application or suspension from the Scholars’ College with loss of any credits earned and fees paid. I have read the Honor Code which guides the behavior of students enrolled in the College. I accept the responsibilities set forth in this Code. I Accept I Reject
