Fine and Performing Arts

 

For students with interests in fields such as theater, fine and graphic arts, dance, music, photography, or any combination of these. In addition to the core curriculum, its requirements are:

 

  • 15 hours of fine arts electives, such as Drawing I or Acting Technique I
  • 24 hours of fine arts electives at the 3000-level or above, such as History of Modern Art or Lighting for the Stage
  • Electives must include at least 28 hours in one discipline and 3 hours from a second discipline
  • 123 hours minimum, including core curriculum.

Foreign Languages

 

This concentration will prepare you for graduate work in foreign languages, classics, or comparative literature, along with a variety of careers in fields such as education, government, or business. In addition to the core curriculum, its requirements are:

 

  • 12 hours of a second foreign language
  • Advanced Grammar
  • Greek and Latin Elements
  • And these options for each target language:
    • French:
      • French I-III
      • 3 hours of history of at least one country where French is spoken
      • 3 hours of French conversation
      • French Culture and Conversation
      • 9 additional hours in courses such as History of French Literature
    • German:
      • German I-III
      • 3 hours of history of at least one country where German is spoken
      • 3 hours of advanced German composition
      • Conversational German
      • German Culture and Civilization
      • 9 additional hours in courses such as German Literature: Romanticism to the Modern Period
    • Latin:
      • Latin I-III
      • A history course such as Athens in the Fifth Century
      • Advanced Composition in Latin (Prose)
      • Advanced Composition in Latin (Poetry)
      • The Comic Muse: Comedy and Satire in the Ancient World, Greek and Roman Art, The Classic Tradition in Western Art, or Rome: Urbs Aeterna
      • 9 additional hours in courses such as Latin Poetry: Vergil and Horace
    • Spanish
      • Spanish I-III
      • 3 hours of history of at least one country where Spanish is spoken
      • Spanish Grammar and Composition I or II
      • Spanish Culture and Civilization
      • Spanish Conversation
      • 9 additional hours in courses such as Survey of Spanish Literature from the Middle Ages through the 17th Century

Humanities and Social Thought

 

Students with interests in the humanities (e.g., English Literature, History, etc.), the social sciences (e.g., psychology, political science, etc.), or philosophy should consider this concentration. It is also designed for students with interdisciplinary interests in several of these areas. In addition to the core curriculum, its requirements are:

 

  • 9 hours of humanities or social science electives, such as Ancient Philosophy
  • 22 hours of humanities or social science electives at the 3000-level or above, including an interdisciplinary seminar such as Ecofeminism or Love and Tyranny
  • 4 hours to be chosen from a list of specific courses that include Sociobiology and the Evolution of Sex and Europe 1660-1789: Art and Politics
  • A course on a Major Figure such as Shakespeare, Darwin, Plato, or Gandhi

History and Philosophy of Science

 

In addition to students with an interest in the history and/or philosophy of science, this concentration will appeal to students with interests in both science and humanities. It also includes all the requirements for students intending to go to medical school, and it provides study in the humanities that will be useful for persons entering a clinical field. In addition to the core curriculum, its requirements are:

 

  • Integral Calculus
  • Applied Statistics
  • Either a second physical science (for pre-med students) or one from a list of specific courses that include Darwin and Evolutionary Theory and Philosophy of Knowledge
  • 2 science courses at the 3000-level and above, to include at least one lab
  • Seminar in the History and Philosophy of Science
  • Introduction to Philosophy or Ethics
  • One course in logic, such as Symbolic Logic
  • Two courses in the history of philosophy: Ancient Philosophy, Medieval Philosophy, Modern Philosophy, or Contemporary Analytic Philosophy
  • 4 additional hours of philosophy courses, such as Philosophy of Film
  • 3 hours of electives
  • 125 hours, including core curriculum

Scientific Inquiry

 

Students interested in scientific fields, including medicine, should choose either this or the History and Philosophy of Science concentration. In addition to the core curriculum, its requirements are:

 

  • 20 hours of science electives, such as Integral Calculus
  • 24 hours of science electives at the 3000-level or above, such as Comparative Neurobiology
  • Electives must include a second semester of calculus; a 2 course sequence in both life and physical science with labs; an additional computer science, math or statistics elective at the 2000 level or above; and a course in logic (math or philosophy), ethics, or the history or philosophy of math or science.
  • 2 hours of a science research seminar.
  • 125 hours, including core curriculum
