Social Work Majors

Have you ever thought about becoming a Louisiana Board Certified Substance Abuse Counselor and/or a Louisiana Board Certified Prevention Specialist?  Now, undergraduate Social Work Majors can complete the course work necessary to become eligible to receive state board supervision hours and to take the certification examination..

 Requirements for Certification:

  1. Students must meet the following criteria for admission to the social work professional program

Ø      Completion of all courses in the pre-professional program;

Ø      A cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above;

Ø      A minimum grade of C or above in Social Work 2090, 2100, English 1010 and 1020;

Ø      Adherence to the values and ethics of the social work profession;

Ø      Submission and approval of an Application to the Social Work Professional Program prior to the pre-registration period for the next regular fall or spring semester.

 

  1. Upon admission, the student must complete all Social Work Major Requirements:

Ø   Forty-eight semester hours within the standard 122 hour undergraduate curriculum, which includes: SOWK 2090, 2100, 3030, 2040, 3120, 3130, 3140, 3180, 4030, 4040, 4190 (field internship / 12 hour placements in a substance abuse treatment agency, 4350, and 4450.

 

  1. In addition, each candidate for the Louisiana State Board Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (LSBCSAC) certificate must take the following as specified electives:

Ø      HED 4600 – Drug and Alcohol Education

Ø      CJ 4500 – Drug Abuse in Modern Society

Ø      PSYC 4700 – Seminar in Alcoholism

Ø      SOWK 4800 – Practice in Addictive Disorders

(3 semester hours each for a total of 12 elective hours)

 

  1. In order to receive the Louisiana State Board Certified Prevention Specialist (LSBCPS) preparatory certified, the following additional specific electives must be taken:

Ø      HED 3000 – Community Health Promotion

Ø      MGT 1020 – Basic Leadership

Ø      MGT 3220 – Organization and Management

Ø      SOWK 4800 – Practice in Addictive Disorders

(3 semester hours each for a total of 12 elective hours)
