LeBreton's research has centered on ninetheenth-century Indian trade, territorial government, and Louisiana ethnic groups. Her particular research emphasis has been on early nineteenth-century Louisiana, especially the Spanish-American borderlands and the multi-cultural heritage and background of twentieth-century Louisiana.

At NSU, LeBreton has taught courses in Louisiana history, the American West, early American history and antebellum America. She has been active in the graduate program and directing theses. She has authored an institutional history of Northwestern State University and contributed chapters on "Bayou Dorcheat" in Rivers and Bayous of Louisiana, the "Burr Conspiracy" in Readings in Louisiana History, and an entry on the Acadians in the Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups. She has contributed articles to various journals and has presented papers at state and regional conferences.
