Raised in the South, Dr. Long developed a passion for politics as a young child. He cast his first vote for Jimmy Carter in a 1980 mock presidential election at his elementary school. He later achieved glory by winning an election for governor in the eighth grade. After realizing that his dream of becoming a professional tennis player was not meant to be, he decided on a career in academics.
His dissertation, Show Me the Money: An Analysis of the Impact of Voter Recognition on the Campaign Spending Effects of House and Senate Candidates, is similar to William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury in that, upon first reading, one doesn’t know what is going on, but upon a second perusal, one senses the work of a genius.
His research agenda includes examining the effects of money in elections, the role of the media in voting decisions, the current support of term limits among the Republican majority, and the democratic peace theory.
Dr. Long is currently director of the Southern Studies Institute and is editor of Southern Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of the South.
