Social Sciences, general Degree Program
Degree Requirements for a B.A. in Social Sciences
Program Coordinator for the Social Sciences degree is Dr. Dean Sinclair.
Social sciences majors have a wide variety of courses from which they can design a curriculum appropriate to their specific career goals. Students complete 21 hours in their primary field; 18 hours in their secondary field; and a minor as described by the department concerned. Examples of these self designed project courses include:
A primary area in political science, secondary area in geography, and minor in economics for a student interested in a career in areas such as IR, International business or the foreign service;
A primary area in geography, secondary area in political science, and minor in history for a student wishing for in depth study in a specific geographical area;
A primary area in economics, secondary area in geography, and minor in business for a student looking at a future in International Business;
A primary area in history, secondary area in geography, and minor in political science for a student interested in a career in secondary education along with their alternative certification.
A primary area in anthropology, secondary area in history, and minor in business for a student who chooses to develop a business to meet the needs of cultural resource management as required under federal law.
The Social Sciences degree is a flexible program allowing students the opportunity to tailor their education to their interests. Social sciences students have the array of courses in the School of Social Sciences at their discretion in order to fulfill the degree requirements. Choosing from anthropology, economics, geography, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, or social studies, the Social Sciences degree requires 122-semester hours. Those hours are broken down into primary and secondary concentrations. The primary concentration has a minimum of 21 hours in the chosen primary discipline and the secondary concentration has a minimum of 18 semester hours in the chosen secondary discipline.
Identifying your areas of concentration and planning a course of instruction around those interests is a valuable tool for Northwestern State University Social Sciences graduates.
