Student Life Council

I.                    Purpose 

A.  Purpose

 

Working under the auspices of the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Student Life Council at Northwestern State University serves as a information exchange between the Northwestern student body and the faculty and staff at the university.  This committee’s primary purpose remains its function as an advocacy group for those students, faculty, or staff wishing to improve the quality of student life at Northwestern State University.

 

B.  Responsibilities

 

1.      To assess all student services provided at the University.

 

2.      Functions as centralized body for hearing suggestions for improvement of student life

 

3.      Acts as an advisory and resource group to the committees under the Student Life Council and the University community.

 

4.      Assesses the function of all committees under the Student Life Council.

 

5.      Serves as an advisor for proposed changes to the Northwestern Student Handbook.

 

6.      Hears reports from committees under the Student Life Council.

 

7.      Advises the Vice President of Student Affairs on appointment of members, not previously appointed by the University Coordinator of Committees, to each Student Life Council standing committees and sub-committees.

 

II.                 Membership and Quorum

 

A.  Voting membership shall be composed of individuals listed below.  Faculty and staff shall be appointed annually.  The length of an appointment of a student will be for the duration that the student is continuously enrolled in the program (undergraduate or graduate) in which he or she is enrolled at the time of appointment to the committee.

 

1.   Director of Student Services (Chair)

 

2.   External Affairs Representative appointed by Vice President for Student Affairs with the approval of the Vice President for External Affairs

 

3.   Academic Affairs Representative appointed by the Vice President for Student Affairs with approval of the Vice President for Academic Affairs

 

4.   Business Affairs Representative appointed by the Vice President for Student Affairs with approval of the Vice President for Business Affairs

 

5.   University Affairs Representative appointed by the Vice President for Student Affairs with approval of the Vice President for University Affairs

 

6.   Student Affairs Representative appointed by the Vice President for Student Affairs

 

7.   Natchitoches Community Representative appointed by the Vice President for Student affairs

 

8.   SGA Representative appointed by the SGA President with approval from the SGA Senate

 

9.   SAB Representative appointed by the SAB President with approval from the Student Activities Board

 

10. Four students, representative of the entire University student populations appointed by the SGA President with approval by the SGA Senate. These representatives shall be non-members of the SGA Student Senate.

 

B.  Student Affairs Committees

 

Student Affairs Committees reflect the organization of the Division of Student Affairs at Northwestern State University.  Each of the Four Departments serves as the custodian of identified committees.  Organization of the committee structure in this manner allows for an understanding of how recommendations should be presented to the Vice President for Student Affairs.  Committees meet as determined by the committee chair.  Operational plans for each committee are included as attachments.

 III.               Operational Plan

 A.  Council Meeting Procedures

 

1.   A majority of the voting membership must be present to constitute quorum and conduct business.

 

2.   The chair will call all meetings and appoint a recorder.

 

3.   Minutes will be forwarded to the SGA President, the SAB President, the President of NSU, and the Vice President for Student Affairs.

 

4.   The chair of the Student Life Council will confer with the SGA President in formulating an agenda, which adheres to the responsibilities of the Student Life Council.

 

5.   Each standing committee will meet at the request of the Student Life Council with the exception of those standing committees and subcommittees which already maintain standing meetings as a condition of their individual operational plan.
