Mission
To support the University goal to create and maintain a responsive,
student-oriented environment, the Division of Student Affairs is
dedicated to providing an environment which enhances the functioning
of individuals and groups to fully realize their potential.
Furthermore, Student Affairs seeks to establish a supportive, safe,
and student-centered campus atmosphere that improves the quality of
life for the Northwestern community.
The Division of Student Affairs acknowledges that much learning takes
place outside of the classroom. Each department and office within
Student Affairs encourages and develops personal growth while
acknowledging the uniqueness of each individual and the need to
provide highly individualized student development vehicles. The need
to extend appropriate programs, services, and activities to students
on all Northwestern campuses and centers is keenly realized. Conscious
efforts are made to develop suitable student services for students in
Shreveport, CenLa, Leesville and other satellite locations.
The Division of Student Affairs seeks to promote growth of the whole
person. Therefore, the departments and offices encourage positive and
realistic self-appraisal, intellectual development, appropriate career
choices, values clarification and goal setting, leadership, physical
fitness, the ability to relate meaningfully to others, the ability to
appreciate cultural and esthetic differences and the capacity to
function independently. In addition, Student Affairs develops
programs, services and activities aimed at teaching students to
identify conditions and environments that interfere with success and
how to change or adapt to existing conditions. The Student Affairs
Division recognizes the need to respond to social, economic, and
cultural changes in our society by continuously evaluating and
adapting student services programs.
Student Affairs staff members take seriously their role model
responsibilities. Each department and office has developed and
published policies and procedures which include ethical guidelines.
The Division of Student Affairs also recognizes that for learning to
occur, it is appropriate to establish reasonable expectations
regarding the behavior of students, thus each department and office
outlines their requirements in formal policies and procedures. The
Student Code of Conduct, published in the Student Handbook, further
describes expected behavior of a Northwestern student and outlines due
process.
The degree of representation of students on Student Affairs committees
demonstrates genuine concern both for student input and for
facilitating growth through actual learning-by-doing situations. The
goal of the Student Government Association, as stated in the Student
Handbook, is to bring the interests and concerns of NSU students to
the attention of the administration. Student participation university
wide is commensurate with the appropriateness of student involvement
in each area.
