Introduction
Just a few years ago, faculty and students of the university needing
to use the universi ty library would have found it necessary to go to the
library. Once there, they would have had to extract information by searching
through card catalogs and printed journal indices. These searches were laborious
and sometimes unproductive, depending on the bibliographic skills of the
searcher. For example, if an English professor wanted to compile a bibliography
of all the articles written about John Donne in the past fifteen years, it
would have been necessary to look through fifteen annual volumes of the
Humanities Index and the Modern Language Association's International Index
thirty volumes all told, and, at the least, most of a day's work.
Information technology has virtually transformed the situation described
above into an "academic legend," largely because the contents of the card
catalog and most printed journal indices have been converted into electronic
databases that can be searched by computer from either one's home or office.
Many journal articles can be viewed or printed in their totality. Indeed,
the list of full-text journal databases is expanding so rapidly that it has
reached the point at which the NSU Libraries can claim subscriptions far
in excess of the 1,800 journals it now receives in print format.
If the NSU Libraries do not have the books or journal articles you need,
a request to borrow from another library through interlibrary loan can be
placed via the library website; you are notified by e-mail when the materials
arrive.
The purpose of this handbook is to acquaint you with the full range of resources,
electronic and otherwise, available in the NSU Libraries, as well as the
simple commands that will allow you access to the databases you want to search.
Please call any member of the Reference Division faculty for more information.

Departments
Director of Libraries. The Director is responsible
for formulating library policy, originating and overseeing the annual budget,
and coordinating the various activities of the remaining departments.
Cammie G. Henry Research Center (also known as the
Archives, the Louisiana Room, and Special Collections). The Research Center
houses the University Archives and is a repository of historical documents.
Materials from the Melrose Plantation Scrapbooks have been scanned and some
are available online. The Melrose Imaging Project is an ongoing activity
and new materials are added regularly. Most of the materials in these collections
do not circulate. The Research Center's hours of operation are generally
limited to weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm.
Reference Division. Sometimes known as the "public
face" of the library, this is the department to which students and faculty
come with questions about library resources. The Reference Division is
responsible for planning and providing instruction to faculty and students.
Reference services include Interlibrary Loan.
Government Documents is a vital component of reference
services. Watson Library is a selective federal depository of government
information, which means that approximately 30% of everything published by
the federal government and distributed by the depository service is available
in the library. Emphasis areas include education, health, and business. Most
documents are listed in the library online catalog. Many government documents
are available on the Internet and links are provided on the library web page.
Government documents not held by Watson Library may be borrowed via Interlibrary
Loan.
Technical Processes Division. This department includes
two areas: cataloging and collection development. Cataloging is responsible
for cataloging library materials in all formats and placing a record in the
online catalog. Collection Development purchases all print and non-print
materials for the three libraries. Faculty members are encouraged to recommend
materials for purchase.
Media/Serials Division. This department handles the
ordering, check-in, and preservation of serials. We currently subscribe to
1,800 journals. The latest issues of journals and newspapers are arranged
by title on open shelves. Older issues are either bound and shelved in the
book stacks, or are purchased on microfilm. Microforms may be read in this
department on special readers, and paper copies can be printed on
reader/printers. All microfiche, including ERIC documents, are kept in the
Media Center with other non-print materials such as CDs, videos, and cassettes.
Equipment for previewing them is also available in the Media Center.
Circulation Department. This department sees that
all circulating materials are properly checked out and retrieved. It
also maintains and circulates materials on Reserve and EReserve materials
on the library web site.
Branch Libraries, Administered by the Director of Libraries:
-
Nursing Library, NSU Shreveport. This library
predominantly contains materials on nursing for the students in that program.
It has full access to all electronic resources. (318) 677-3007
-
Leesville Library, This branch library has
full access to all electronic databases used by the main library and has
a small, core collection. (337) 238-6450
-
Cenla Library, England
Air Park, Alexandria. This library maintains a small, core collection that
consists mostly of journals to support the programs offered there. The
computer lab provides access to the Library Catalog and other online
resources.

Liaisons
The library liaison program exists to establish formal, ongoing working
relationships between the Library and University departments or divisions.
Our goal is to ensure good public relations with faculty and students
in all aspects of library service. The NSU Libraries faculty are assigned
by the Library Director as liaisons with departments or divisions based on
interest and/or educational background in an academic field.
The role of the library liaison:
-
represent the needs of the academic department or division to the library.
-
initiate and maintain communication between the library and the department
or division.
-
select library materials and review faculty requests for materials in the
assigned subject area.
-
provide special service or to serve as a contact between department members
and library faculty.
-
facilitate the resolution of service problems for individuals within the
academic departments or divisions.

Table of Contents
Services for NSU Faculty
The purpose of this section is to acquaint faculty with the library services
available to them. The library web page is an excellent source for information
on library policies and services. Check it out at
http://www.nsula.edu/watson_library/index.html .
A virtual
tour of Watson Library is also available on the web page. Learn more about the library with lessons from
the e-mail library instruction program. Copies of some of the most requested
user's guides
are available through the web page.
Circulation - Faculty members may check out books
for 90 days and most other circulating material for 21 days. Faculty may
also check out current and bound periodicals for a three-day period with
the permission of the Head of the Media/Serials Division or the reference
librarian on duty. Some reference materials may be checked out for a period
of three days. Bring your NSU ID card if you plan to check out materials.
You can identify what you have checked out by using the "My Account" feature
in our online catalog. Go to the library web page and select "NSU Libraries"
and then "My Account." You can select "Review My Account," "Renew My Materials,"
or "Change My Address." Enter your user ID (social security number) and PIN
(6 digit birthday mmddyy.)
Reserves - Faculty members are urged to place on reserve
materials that a large number of students will be using. Some reserve articles
can be viewed electronically, within copyright and length constraints. Users
may visit the library website to see what items are on reserve and may read
them on the screen, print them, or download the information. All reserve
materials are subject to copyright restrictions. Contact the circulation
department at 357-4477 with questions about this service.
Reference - The reference faculty is available to consult
with teaching faculty about their research and classroom needs, including
reviewing assignments requiring library resources. The reference room has
a number of print and electronic resources to answer directory, statistical,
factual, and other types of research queries. Questions can be submitted
electronically via the reference form on the library web page. (Copies of
forms are available in the Appendix.)
Library Instruction - One member of the reference
faculty has been assigned the duty of coordinating library instruction, but
all reference librarians perform library instruction. The instruction may
take any form, from the self-guided tour to an in-depth lesson on library
resources. The self-guided tour consists of a booklet with questions for
the students to answer based on what they have gleaned from the tour. A
virtual tour
is available on the library website. A library instruction lab with sixteen
workstations is used for instruction about electronic resources.
Reference librarians are willing to consult with faculty on assignments and
appropriate library instruction. To schedule an instruction session, please
call 357-4574 at least a week in advance. Please remember that during busy
times, you may have to select an alternate date. The reference librarian
who schedules your class will need to know the course number, number of students,
date and time of the tour, and what you want emphasized. You are expected
to attend the sessions with your students.
A computer assisted instruction program, Research Assistant, is available
in the reference room. This program leads the user step-by-step through the
research process, from locating a topic to writing the final paper.
Interlibrary Loan - This is the means whereby one library
can borrow books or receive photocopies from other libraries. A form is available
on the library web page that
you can submit
electronically. Instructions on accessing this service are available on the
library web page under "Request an Interlibrary Loan." (Please make a note
of your user name and password for tracking your ILL account.) Generally,
you should allow 7 to 10 working days from submission to receipt
of your request. You will be notified by e-mail or phone when your request
is available. A library system that allows for electronic transmission of
interlibrary loan articles from member libraries reduces delivery time to
hours rather than days. Interlibrary Loan services are free to faculty members.
Chemical Abstracts Searches The reference department has access to
STN Easy to search Chemical Abstracts. A reference librarian performs the
search for you. To request a search, contact a member of the reference staff.
That person will ask you about the type of information you are seeking and
search terms you would suggest. The search will be scheduled as soon as possible,
and you are invited to sit in, but it is not required. The service is free
of charge to faculty and students.
Distance Education A number of library resources are available to
assist faculty who are teaching distance education courses. The resources
are discussed in this handbook of library services. A shorter handout is
distributed to DE students. Additional copies are available at the reference
desk and on the library website. Please contact a reference librarian for
more information.
Media/Serials Current issues of serials are housed here, along with
all serials that are on microfilm, ERIC Documents on microfiche, multi-media
materials, and equipment for viewing all of these items. A copier and several
reader/printers are available for making copies. Media/Serials personnel
will produce copies from any of the formats at no cost to faculty members.
Photocopies Three copiers are located in the main library; each branch
library has at least one. They use copy cards rather than cash. Faculty may
request complimentary cards from the library secretary.
Student Assistants/Graduate Assistants Faculty members using students
to do research for them may authorize those students to check out materials,
submit and pick up Interlibrary loans, and make copies. Send a letter on
departmental letterhead identifying the student and the services he or she
will perform. (They will need to bring your ID card if they check out materials
for you.)
Ordering Materials All faculty members are invited to submit requests
for the purchase of materials. Each department is allocated an amount of
money each year. The library liaison will inform department heads and faculty
members of the amount available. Liaisons or any reference librarian can
supply you with order forms. An
electronic
form is available at the library website. You can also give us catalogs,
fliers, brochures, etc, with your selections clearly marked and we will complete
the process for you. Your requests can be submitted to your liaison or any
member of the library faculty or staff.
Cammie G. Henry Research Center - Questions involving
materials contained in the Research Center should be directed to the university
archivist or assistant archivist. Materials from the Melrose Plantation
scrapbooks and collection have been scanned and are available to view
electronically in the Research Center. The
Melrose
imaging project is an ongoing activity and new materials are added regularly.
Table of Contents
Web Page and Remote Access
The
NSU Libraries web page serves many purposes.
It is designed to provide information useful in research, an introduction
to the Internet, and information about library events. In addition to the
unique information provided on the web page, you will find links to external
resources and, most important, links to databases to which the library
subscribes.
On the web page you will find the library's hours, Keep in mind that the library's hours change
during the summer, between semesters and on University holidays.
Links to the three libraries' web pages, access to the catalog, databases,
and Interlibrary loan, as well as a search engine. You may also renew
books online as well as other resources.
The Watson Library webpage gives links to all library
departments, a virtual tour of Watson Library and
a directory of library staff and faculty including photos and e-mail addresses,
and library telephone numbers.
Branch Libraries Both the Shreveport Nursing Library and the Leesville Library have web pages that are linked to Watson Library's main web
page and are designed to meet the needs of their patrons.
Library Departments Each library department has its own web page on
the library site. Information on a department's page may include hours, staff
contact information, services, and special collections.
Remote Access Links to all library electronic resources are featured
prominently on the web page. To access these resources, go to the
library web page and select "Databases"
from the menu.
On-campus , the databases will function like the public unified workstations in
the library. For access from off-campus, you will be required to supply an
ID number and a PIN number. Your ID is either your social security number
or your alternate ID (NS + first 3 letters of your last name + last 4 digits
of your social security number). Your PIN number is a six-digit number comprised
of your birth month, day, and year (March 15, 1975 would be 031575). Finally,
select "Northwestern State University" from the drop-down menu and authenticate
your information.
Internet ResourcesInternet Resources In addition to links to
the library databases, you will find links to several Internet resources.
These resources, chosen by the library faculty and staff, represent areas
of particular interest to our patrons. They provide quick access to valuable
information on the Internet. However, these few links are not a substitute
for our subscription databases.
Also featured on the library website are several subject-based
User's
Guides, transcripts of
e-mail library
instruction sessions, and the web page for the
Louisiana
Association for Academic Competition (LAAC). User's Guides provide library
users with a bibliography of basic resources in all formats and serve as
a starting point for much subject-based research. Most of these resources
are available in the Reference Room of Watson Library.
Get in Touch From the web page there are several ways to get in touch
with the library. First, there is the
"Ask A Reference
Question" form. Fill out this form to ask a reference question or request
any other information about the library or its services. Any user may use
the "Recommend
A Book For Purchase" form. Please include all requested information
about the item. You will be notified when the book you recommend arrives.
The "Request an
Interlibrary Loan" form is for use by NSU affiliates only. Again, please
provide all necessary information. In addition to these forms, there are
direct e-mail links to the
webmaster
and the library director.
Questions? If you have any further questions about services the library provides
through its web page, or to ask a reference question, e-mail the
Reference Department or telephone
the Reference desk at (318) 357-4574 or (888) 540-9657.
