Additional Info

Our English degrees, undergraduate and graduate, offer students many opportunities: you may find yourself discussing literature from the old English Beowulf to Louise Erdrich’s most recent novel, analyzing film to understand how a director unfolds a narrative or dialogues with the audience, diagramming sentences on the sidewalk outside Kyser Hall, exploring archives in the Watson Library, publishing your poetry or stories in our award-winning student literary journal Argus, or even interviewing storytellers. Beyond providing critical thinking and close reading skills, our major prepares students for a variety of post-college possibilities including graduate school, professional school, and careers in diverse fields like medicine, writing, publishing, law, government, business, education, and film.

Our undergraduate degree in Communication offers students a career path in mass communication or journalism or other communication positions in organizations. The degree helps you polish communications and multimedia skills–key to success in any career. Faculty members with professional experience work with students in the classroom and in student media activities: newspaper (print and online editions), yearbook, radio station, and TV station. Faculty will also assist you in selecting an internship your junior or senior year. Internships prepare students for the workforce as they apply skills learned on campus in work settings. Please, ask us about the exciting opportunities awaiting you in a Communications major or minor.

Our minor in Foreign Languages exposes students to the study and teaching of the different languages, literatures, and cultures of Spanish- and French-speaking countries. The richness of their cultures is amply represented in the extensive range of courses offered in language, linguistics, and literature. A minor in a foreign language is attractive to prospective employers because you can perform your job duties bilingually. Students prepared in foreign languages will have the skills appropriate for a career in education, law, medicine, translation, or interpretation.
