NATCHITOCHES – John W. Sutherlin, Ph.D., a professor of political science at the University of Louisiana Monroe, will give a lecture at the Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern State University on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. in Room 227 of Morrison Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

The topic is “Environmental Justice or Environmental for Just Us? The Pursuit of Equity in the Pelican State.” Sutherlin is the author of two books, “Playing with Fire” (2021) and “Garbage Gumbo” (2022).

According to Sutherlin, regardless of the environmental issue, poor people of color are more likely to live in contaminated communities than affluent whites.

“Many would suggest that this is merely a function of economics and not a deliberate policy of targeting minorities,” said Sutherlin. “However, a review of the permitting process, monitoring and compliance, enforcement, and locations of emissions and discharges reveals something different. This presentation will consider certain sectors and the impacts on communities of color as it offers a way for Louisiana to pursue more equitable environmental policy and justice for all.”

The lecture is part of the observance of Black History Month and is sponsored by the Louisiana Scholars’ College and the NSU Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
