10. St. Paul Bottoms and Sprague Street

Renamed Ledbetter Heights in honor of renowned blues singer Huddie Ledbetter, the St. Paul Bottoms including Sprague Street was an African American social entertainment district in the 1940s and 1950s. One of the only black-owned hotels prior to the Civil Rights movement, the Castle Hotel on Sprague Street served visitors as well as famous African American celebrities. The Castle Hotel and the Bottoms, in such close proximity to the nearby Municipal Auditorium, made the Municipal an especially popular venue for black entertainers in the 1960s and 1970s.
