Manuel’s Nightclub

Site 20

The intersection of Lee Street (now Martin Luther King) and Amulet was an important business and social hub in the African American community in Natchitoches. Included within the boundaries of Jackson Square, this area was home to numerous Black-owned and operated businesses, including Manuel’s Nightclub, Burton’s Place, Mama Fannie’s Boarding House, and Dr. and Mrs. E. A. Johnson’s first home and place of business.

Where the tank is … Lee Street, which is now Martin Luther King and Amulet Street, that was what we call the juke joints – that was nightclubs or whatever…. Manuel’s [was there].

Mama Fannie’s boarding house … Manuel’s place was in front of that.

Shot from the southeast corner of the intersection, Manuel’s was located on the northwest corner where the small white trailer now sits. Mama Fannie’s occupied the northeast corner next to the water tower. Photo by Dayna Bowker Lee
