North Street Boxing Club

Site 23

In one of his many efforts to provide activities for African American youth in the Jackson Square area, Ben Johnson established a boxing club.

Behind that store, Doc had a boxing ring and I can remember going and you had seats … like a little arena, and the sawdust on the floor…. Sam the Ram was a boxer…. Popeye was a boxer…. I don’t know where he would get these boxers, but that was the hub of entertainment.

It was on the Ben Johnson property out there near the swimming pool. People question you, wish that they could’ve kept it going, but you know how it is – sometimes you don’t have the funds to continue these things.
