NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s Orville Hanchey Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition by Assistant Professor of Art Sean Callander through Feb. 21, alongside a student group exhibition and a slate of public events tied to the shows.
Callander’s exhibition, titled Sueo Immolare, explores themes of simplicity and historical connection within contemporary contexts. The work is on view in Hanchey Gallery.
Gallery 2 is hosting a group exhibition, Tempore Meo, featuring students who have worked closely with Callander. Participating artists include Noah Martinez, Summer Richardson and Millard Mangrum of Natchitoches, Nick Stelly of Geismar and Eloise Boudreaux of Stonewall. The exhibition runs through Feb. 20.
A joint public reception for both exhibitions will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16. During the reception, from 5-6 p.m., improvisational dancers J. Batiste of Montgomery, Trinity Patrick of Alexandria and Kim Cain of Natchitoches will perform throughout Hanchey Gallery and Gallery 2, activating the exhibition spaces and engaging visitors. Refreshments will be provided from 5-8 p.m.
Earlier that day, a Student Craft Show highlighting NSU students’ work in three-dimensional crafts, particularly ceramics, will take place from 2-6 p.m. in Lower Hanchey. Students and faculty will offer functional and craft wares for sale ahead of the evening reception, coinciding with Mardi Gras weekend.
Following the reception, guests are invited to remain on site for a live outdoor performance by local band Ghost Ridge, scheduled from 7-9 p.m. on the stage outside Hanchey Gallery.
