NATCHITOCHES, La. — The New Media, Journalism and Communication Department at Northwestern State University of Louisiana is honoring the life and legacy of L.J. Melder, a 98-year-old alumnus and one of the last living World War II veterans in both Natchitoches and the state of Louisiana, through a recently released interview and feature story.
Melder’s interview is a co-production of The Current Sauce and NSU-TV.
Melder, a Natchitoches native born on September 9, 1927, is a graduate of Northwestern State University and a proud supporter of the institution. His story was captured in an interview conducted by The Current Sauce podcast anchor Anastasia Douglas, where Melder reflected on his life, military service and enduring love for his hometown and alma mater. The interview is available on YouTube, accompanied by a written feature article.
During the interview, Melder shared memories of his time as a student at NSU, where he initially hoped to join
the football team and later worked at the university dairy while pursuing a degree in business administration. He also spoke about his service in the U.S. Navy, where he served from 1945 to 1947 as a destroyer escort aboard the USS Major Pacific, witnessing firsthand the realities of World War II.
Melder expressed pride in the growth and evolution of Northwestern State University and offered advice to today’s students, emphasizing the importance of dedication, learning and perseverance. Now approaching his 100th birthday in 2027, Melder continues to spend time with his family while reflecting on a life shaped by service, community and resilience.
