NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University’s School of Kinesiology will host a ribbon-cutting to celebrate its new name Thursday, Aug. 27 at 170 Tarleton Dr., the School of Kinesiology building, formerly known as the Department of Health and Human Performance.  The name change reflects the school’s growth and aligns its identity with terminology commonly used throughout the profession.

The event will be presented in partnership with the Natchitoches Area Chamber of Commerce and is free and open to the public.  The ceremony will begin at noon and light refreshments will be provided.

The grand launch will include a 1 p.m. Q and A with the School of Kinesiology Advisory Panel, a group of both new and veteran industry professionals, who will discuss trends in the industry, career paths and opportunities, partnerships and the high demand for young professionals in physical therapy, sports performance and wellness.

While the school’s name has changed, degree requirements, faculty, courses and student pathways remain the same. University officials said the transition reflects the school’s existing academic focus rather than a change in curriculum.

In recent years, the school has expanded its academic offerings with the addition of a Bachelor of Science in Sport and Recreation Management, a minor in coaching and a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology. The school is expanding its graduate offerings with a proposed doctoral concentration in Human Performance.
